This class is open to everyone who is interested in learning Chinese brush painting, also known as Sumi-e in Japan. No previous experience is necessary—we will begin with the basics and gradually explore different techniques and styles of expression.
Students will be introduced to the traditional materials known as the “Four Treasures” of Chinese painting: the brush, ink stick, ink stone, and rice paper. Through guided practice, participants will learn fundamental brush strokes and explore the many shades and textures that can be created with ink.
Throughout the course, students will learn to paint the “Four Gentlemen” of Chinese brush painting—plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. These classic subjects help students practice essential techniques while also exploring their symbolic meaning in East Asian art.
As the class progresses, students will build confidence using the brush, experiment with ink gradations and color, and develop a deeper understanding of the unique qualities of rice paper and traditional brushes.
By the end of the course, participants will have their own experience with this beautiful and expressive art form and a foundation to continue exploring Chinese brush painting.
