Roger Allbee’s Turning the Soil: 250 Years of Vermont Agriculture is a historical look at how Vermont farming has changed over more than two and a half centuries, from land use and rural communities to farm practices, production, and policy. It highlights the resilience of farmers and how Vermont agriculture has continually adapted to new pressures like transportation, technology, and market change.
Allbee’s own life story is closely tied to that history. He was raised on his family’s hilltop farm in Brookline, Vermont, where his family has farmed since 1794, and later built a career in agricultural policy and leadership, including work with the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture, service as Vermont’s Secretary of Agriculture, and leadership roles in federal farm service and hospital administration.
In short, the book is both a history of Vermont agriculture and a reflection of Allbee’s lifelong connection to it.
